Getting Started with Rotary Files: What Every Dentist Should Know

Getting-Started-with-Rotary-Files

Hello once again!! This blog is for the beginners to know about your Rotary files.

Rotary files are also known as endodontic files that are specific instruments used in dentistry for root canal treatment. Root canal treatment involves removing infected or damaged pulp from the inside of a tooth and cleaning the root canals before filling and sealing them. Rotary files play a crucial role in shaping and cleaning the root canals. Nineten introduces you to an amazing world class file system; NT Rainbow, that is known for its refined and specialised cutting.

Let us dive into some key features about rotary files:

Function: The primary function of rotary files is to shape the root canals by removing infected or damaged tissue and debris. The files are attached to a slow-speed dental equipment; endomotor, which rotates them at a controlled speed. As the files rotate, their cutting edges scrape and shape the walls of the root canals. This process allows for better cleaning and disinfection of the canals and facilitates the placement of filling materials.

Construction: Rotary files are typically made of stainless steel or nickel-titanium alloy. They are slender, flexible instruments with a tapered design that allows them to fit into the narrow and curved root canals. The files have cutting edges or flutes along their shafts, which help in removing debris and shaping the canals.

Types and Sizes: Rotary files come in various types and sizes to accommodate different treatment needs. The most commonly used types are called Hedstrom files, K-files, and NiTi files (made of nickel-titanium alloy). They differ in their cutting efficiency, flexibility, and resistance to fracture. Each type has a range of sizes, indicated by their ISO (International Organization for Standardization) numbers, which represent the tip diameter in mm.

Advantages: Rotary files offer several advantages over traditional hand files. They are more efficient and time-saving, as they can rapidly shape the root canals. The rotational motion of the files can reduce operator fatigue. Additionally, the flexibility of nickel-titanium files allows them to navigate curved canals more effectively.

Precautions and Technique: The use of rotary files requires skill and precision. Overuse or excessive force can lead to file separation or canal perforation. Therefore, dentists must use them cautiously and adhere to proper technique. The files should be periodically inspected for signs of wear or damage and replaced when necessary.

Sterilization: Rotary files must be properly sterilized before each use to prevent cross-contamination and ensure patient safety. They should undergo thorough cleaning and sterilization according to established dental office protocols.

In the next blog we shall learn a little bit more into the world of rotary.
